African Baskets

These Baskets from KwaZulu Natal in South Africa are absolutely amazing. I've decided to carry them on my online store, Kerut Home for their beautiful craftsmanship, detail and contemporary clean look. These baskets are made from Ilala palm fronds. The fronds are collected, pulled into strips, naturally dyed and then hung to dry as the traditional Zulu women prepare their materials for basket-weaving. The palm fronds have a natural waxy coating which makes them ideal for the weaving of these watertight baskets. These baskets are also a product of Fair Trade. This fair trade partnership works to provide low-income artisans and farmers with a living wage for their work. Please support the people of Africa by purchasing these stunning fair trade baskets. I will add more baskets to the site soon. As of now, I have the 2 large ones with lids, and 2 bowl baskets.

Happy to be back!! I had strep throat that kept me in bed or on the sofa in a comatose state feeling like I would never recover and get back to the outside world, and the city of NY, that I adore so much. Marina Abromovic's amazing performance art exhibit has ended, I report...sadly. During the 4 months (I think) while she was at the MOMA, I would leisurely take a stroll a few blocks and visit her and the other artist's once in a while when I had the time. The energy I received from the crowd and the exhibit inspired and motivated me. It opened up a space in my mind and fascinated me to the core, although I never did muster up the courage to sit at her table and stare into her intensity. Anyway, for those of you who want more of Marina, and just can't let go of it all, check out Personal Archaeology at Sean Kelly Gallery through June 19.

I attended the New Finnish Design Show this weekend, and even though it was small, it contained some quality design. The above images are a few of my favorites that I photographed while I was there.

The first is Alessi, Adagio Fat Tray & 123DL. by designers Harri Koskinen and Kristiina Lassus. A set of three different sized crystalline glasses intended for several purposes: drinking toasting measuring cooking stacking storing. The Fat Tray made of bamboo can "swallow" inside it everything one needs for setting a table, while food beverages or pastries can be placed on top for serving.

The second is Anu Penttinen, City Plan 24/7. The City Plan wall pieces are versatile art products. It represents the artist's interest in introducing urban moods into hand-made art glass objects. A City Plan is about the small details within a cityscape: signs signals architecture walkways everyday objects.

The last is offered by Mottoform. These are part of a collection of old things made new, each with it's own story and design. Each textile embodies the unique history of a previous life in a home or cottage-where signs of age and use are markes of beauty. The Helsinki made hand printed vintage linens contains relief patterns found in Helsinki Art Nouveau architecture.

Designer Kaj Franck is often described as the conscience of Finnish design. He thought that in order to be designated good and beautiful, an object had to be durable, robust, easy to clean, functional, do justice to the materials used for it, and be indispensable. By removing everything excessive from his designs and leaving only the essential, he created a design philosophy, which has become the backbone of Finnish design.

The starting point for STRAIGHTFORWARD stemmed from the validity of this principle today. The route was to discover the ways in which present day Finnish design still embraces those traditional values, and how these values have been reinterpreted today.

A couple weeks ago I posted the Unknown Hipster blog. I'm happy to see he's posting again, but I a most happy that he has posted about Marina Abromovic's exhibit. Yes, there has been a lot of talk about the show, as there really should be! I have chosen to not blog about the show, even though I really have wanted to, but felt I could never describe it perfectly enough with out sitting down in front of my computer trying to write the most perfect eloquent post, which would take me,ummmmm... all day! To me the show was that good, that I don't even want to touch it by writing about it, if you know what I mean. I'll leave that to the professional writers. Marina Abromovic's exhibit moved me tremendously, and I won't say anymore because it's something that one has to experience for themselves, because everyone will take away from it something different I'm sure. I've just discovered the talented Michael Hainey! deputy editor of GQ magazine, Hainey is also a poet a writer and painter who resides in Greenwich Village, NYC. His pieces are being snatched up by the likes of Thom Brown, Jeff Klein and Nate Berkus. Awwww shucks, which means I can never afford his work now!! Growing up amidst of stacks of blueprints, art volumes, and music anthologies in the woods of North Carolina, Ms. Huang Selway first began making jewelry after reading a book about Alexander Calder at the age of 8. Between pursuing bachelors and masters

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a minimalist. I love collecting an assortment of interesting objects, from the pretty to the ugly. However my apartment is certainly not cluttered-there's a place for everything. I always say accessories and artwork really make your home you! The things you live amongst says a lot about your personality, and these things brings a sense of warmth and character to the space. I can never be a Buddhist, I have such an attachment to all my things. My new favorite coffee table read is "American Living" by one of my favorite designers, Thomas O'Brien. It's all about beautiful organized clutter. I love it! I also love O'Brien's showroom in SOHO called Aero.

I realize I don't blog enough about food, and I loooove food! I mean...really love it! Especially if it involves some stinky cheese, and a load of carbs. Yep...this is why I see the gym just about every day. For an early Easter dinner, I went to a Casselulla just around the corner from my apartment. It's a charming little cheese and wine cafe, but they really have much more than cheese and wine, like yummy smoked cat fish tacos mmmm, my favorite! Anyway, This is their philosophy:

The 80's...Again!

There is no questions about it, we are reliving the 80's. I actually don't mind, I loved the era, I mean, I was just a kid, but the whole care free fashion experimentation and electronic music really helped a small town gay boy out, and I mean small...population-800!. It allowed me to express myself as an individual in a crap hole of a town! With a little help from Lady Gaga, the 80's are back. The sad sad economy I think motivates people to step out of the box, and express themselves through music, fashion and art. This helps to remove themselves from current issues, because after a while it just gets to be all too much. We need relief, we need to have a little fun, and just let it all go. I believe that the creative community introduces their best work during a time of crisis. Currently, people in general have just a little more time on their hands, this allows us to think more (or maybe not), create more, and opens up a space for inspiration...we all want to be inspired right now!! Anyway, yesterday's New York Times had a great article called "Going Gaga". The photographs in the article are great... NYC club kids, socialites, musicians and artists in their colorful getup's.

Raven - O My!

One more night of Raven O at 45 Bleecker. I dragged my ass over to the lower east side last night and saw this tiny very fit girl boy perform his one (androgynous) man show. The boy with the tatted bod can definitely belt out a tune. During the hour and a half show the former Cirque Du Soleil Zumanity performer took the audience through his life with song and story-From his growing up in Hawaii to his prostitution and crack filled days in New York City. The show took off a little rocky, but as soon as he took his little jacket off, revealing skin, the little she boy loosened up. mmmm hmmmm...this is not for the little kids! 40 minutes into his act this damn former tranny ho had me in tears. Raven's jazzy rich vocals cracked during times from telling his story of his hard life on the streets of NYC, which in turn made the audience shift in their seats trying to hold back their own croc drops (crocodile tears). OOOOO The life of a former crack head ho...now at a theater near you!! If your in town March 2nd check out his last performance,if not for the main entertainment, at least for the crowd gazing. Raven-O packs a theater full of very stylish, sexy, socialite mass of peeps!

Farewell Bryant Park

We say goodbye to Fashion Week (for now), and goodbye to the end of an era (for good). Bryant Park, the home to Fashion Week for the past 17 years will be moving it's tents to Lincoln Center. There has been talk of moving the three catwalks and the large white canvas structure to New York's home of Opera for quite some time now. Anna Wintour and the fashion world has been fighting against the park management's decision to relocate. But now, the park has finally taken back their grass, and has mowed over couture. But, you don't hear me complaining about this. The Lincoln Center is just a very short skip away from my apartment!! I'll have it all right on my doorstep. Anyway, on the last day of fashion week the supervisor that organizes the tent setup gave me the most amazing complete tour of the space. He took me behind the scenes, backstage, under the lighting booths, in the makeup areas, all of the VIP rooms, and to all three catwalks. I must say, the tents are much larger than what they seem. I ended the day with the the David Delfin and Trias shows. So for now, this is goodbye Fashion Week, But next season...Hellllooooooo next door neighbor!!

Visited some of my favorite stores yesterday while out Holiday shopping. Couldn't help but to pick up something a little yummy for my olfactory at Aedes De Venustas, a Cire Trudon candle. Beyond the noisy city, through the woods and away from the McMansions sits a collector's paradise. Nestled on the edge of the Catskills in upstate NY is a fine old shop Called Kabinett and Kammer, created by the ever so talented Sean Scherer. My visit was welcomed with creaky floors, early american delights, and curiosities in every corner and cranny.
Kabinett and Kammer is the expression of Sean Scherer’s ethos and vision. A prolific artist, educator and collector, Scherer’s aesthetic extends through all aspects of his life. The store functions as a curated gallery space, the culmination of years of collecting and a passionate pursuit of the extraordinary. I'm sure looking forward to my next winding drive through the woods to my new favorite store.

One of my favorite NYC galleries is featuring rare prints of one of my favorite photographers, Edward Weston from September 9 to October 24. Only Edward was able to make produce look sexy! He had an ability to allow viewers of his photographs to see what his eyes saw. People that look at his work can step into his world and see the toil of his genius mind. The beauty in the simplicity of a tree trunk, or a gorgeously proportioned nautilus shell, and the sensuous curves of the human back...all such great work.

Ten leading designers have been commissioned to develop new uses for sustainably grown and harvested materials in order to tell a unique story about the life-cycle of materials and the power of conservation and design. The featured designers and places include Yves Behar/Costa Rica; Stephen Burks/Australia; Hella Jongerius/Mexico; Maya Lin/Maine; Christien Meindertsma/Idaho; Isaac Mizrahi/Alaska; Abbott Miller/Bolivia; Ted Muehling/Micronesia; Kate Spade/Bolivia; and Ezri Tarazi/China. On view will be the prototypes, drawings, and finished product created by the designers. The exhibition is co-curated by renowned graphic designer Abbott Miller and Ellen Lupton, curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt. This is the debut venue in a national tour of the exhibition, organized by The Nature Conservancy.

During my recent sun worshiping, shell fish fest, cucumber martini sipping, bike riding, and beach travels to Provincetown, MA. ( Sigh, I want to go back!) I couldn't resist stopping off at a little store on the Commercial St. strip called MAP. By far, it's the best store in P-Town. We all know P-Town is for the gays, and the gays love shopping...but this little town is really just known for it's parties, bars, and food. Since I am not much of a party boy (gone are those days) All of you who know me best, know that shopping is always on the top of my list before any drunk fest, especially when it includes the likes of man accessories...BAGS, BAGS, BAGS! Map carries the Japanese, Porter Yoshida bag line. How the Japanese know how to construct a bag!! I've been searching for the perfect back pack...one with function, simplicity, style and detail. I love everything about this one, and being the bag whore that I am, I was sold on the addition of the handle straps to be used as a tote! So, even though this one is a back pack and looks "manly", it contains a little sass as well...the perfect man bag.
