Oka's World

Oka Doner's work is fueled by a lifelong study and appreciation of the natural world, from which she derives her formal vocabulary. I'm entranced by her works!

Michael Hainey

I've just discovered the talented Michael Hainey! deputy editor of GQ magazine, Hainey is also a poet a writer and painter who resides in Greenwich Village, NYC. His pieces are being snatched up by the likes of Thom Brown, Jeff Klein and Nate Berkus. Awwww shucks, which means I can never afford his work now!! Anyway, I can at least sit back and enjoy the understated beauty of his quirky, thoughtful, and whimsical creations. Damn! But that little charcoal bird would look amazing in my apartment. Hmmmmm

Small Brain Big Stomach

The artist, Olaf Breuning's new work is currently at the Metro Pictures Gallery in NYC. I took a spin around the stark space during my lunch hour today which completely lured me in with the graphic contrast of black art and white walls. This exhibit should not be missed!

Weston on the West End

One of my favorite NYC galleries is featuring rare prints of one of my favorite photographers, Edward Weston from September 9 to October 24. Only Edward was able to make produce look sexy! He had an ability to allow viewers of his photographs to see what his eyes saw. People that look at his work can step into his world and see the toil of his genius mind. The beauty in the simplicity of a tree trunk, or a gorgeously proportioned nautilus shell, and the sensuous curves of the human back...all such great work.

Amazing Grace...

How sweet you pose. Last night I attended Tanyth Berkeley’s opening reception at James Danziger projects in Chelsea. As I entered the crowded and energetic space of the gallery, I knew I was in for a little treat. Working my way past the collection of eclectic people to Tanyth’s work, I would periodically catch glimpses of striking glow pale between the contrasts of New York’s dark fashion. I just wanted to finally arrive at one largely framed piece to soak in the photographer’s message, and enjoy the sensual beauty of Grace. Berkeley’s subject and friend of 7 years, Grace Longoria, I would say is somewhat of a muse. Grace’s unusual appearance and curvaceous body, is striking and fantasy like. Some of the photographs such as the one above capture a classical portrait painting quality. What photographer or painter wouldn’t want to use Grace as a model/subject, she’s quite stunning and amusing, as she was there last night gracing the crowd with all her qualities. So, after grabbing my glass of white wine, I finally arrive at my favorite photograph! The one you see just below. Grace’s head is tilted to the side, in front of a window that is filling her up with natural light, her eyes are closed and her hair is fine like that of a baby’s. Her mouth is slightly opened and her eyes are closed. Alright, yeah, you see the photo - I guess I don’t have to explain it to you. But I was recapturing last nights moment here damn it! Anyway, there is such a sense of innocence to this shot, along with the entire collection. But, when I look at this photo, I see; new, birth, womb, life, and grace…so refreshing. Tanyth Berkeley is a genius photographer, and her exhibit at the wonderful gallery space at Danziger projects should not be missed.

From The Village to Vogue

Art Smith's orginal sign that was displayed
on his storefront in Greenwich village on Cornelia St.
in the mid 1900's

"Patina" Necklace inspired by Calder's mobiles

Recently, I visited the Brooklyn Art Museum for the first time, and was impressed by the enormity of the structure, but the exhibit that the Museum is currently housing through July 19th of Art Smith's jewelry was very inspirational. The exhibit honors the gift of twenty-one pieces of silver and gold jewelry created by the Brooklyn-reared modernist jeweler, primarily from Charles Russel, Smith's companion and heir.

The amazing biomorphic, surrealistic, and primitive inspired gems are very light weight and wearable. The jewelry dates from the late 1940's to the 1970's and includes his most famous pieces, such as a "Patina" necklace inspired by the mobiles of Alexander Calder; a "Lava" bracelet, or cuff, that extends over the entire lower arm in undulating and overlapping forms; and a massive ring with three semi-precious stones that stretches over three fingers.

I think I was instantly drawn to the jewelry because they reminded me of Alexander Calder's art, that organicness that you see in Calder's work you also see in Smith's as well.. Learning that Smith, along with other jewelers of his time were actually inspired by Calder and his kinetic, abstract designs made me even more intrigued with all the beautiful gold and silver creatures lurking behind the display cases.

Like Calder, they used high quality materials such as gold, platinum, and precious stones. "Their jewelry was an ornamental interpretation of contemporary art that integrated an awareness of the human form and the notion of wearbility."

If you are in the New York area, I highly recommend you check this exhibit out before it is pulled on July 19th.

Art Over Cold and Shaky Waters

Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset

Giulio Paolini, "L'altra Figura"

Mark Quinn "Meditation on Illusion"

Tom Molloy, "Swarm"

This past weekend on Piers 92 and 94 over the cold Hudson river, The Armory show, New York's International Fair of New Art brought in fewer crowds than other years according to some reviews. In it's tenth year running, the show expanded in size by incorporating a new section of Modern works. While a lot of the art seemed gimmicky, there were some other pieces that were of quality. Typically, during the past nine shows, dealers were prepared to skim 10% off asking prices, however this year, some desperately knocked off 30%. Some dealers complained about not selling any art at all, and others did very well, like Vladimir Ovcharenko of the Regina Gallery in Moscow. He sold a neon sign by a French artist, Claire Fontaine, for $20,000...It read: "Capitalism Kills."

OK, OK...this was kind of a depressing post, I promise an upbeat one tomorrow!

MIRO-CLE METAL WORKER!

Cuffs/bracelets

Darcy Miro

Walking by Darcy Miro's shop on Bedford Street, one can't help but to be captivated by the display of organically shaped metal works of art behind the storefront glass. As the gracefully twisted and textured metals softly reflect the sunlight, they initially leave you pondering over what they actually are; sculptures?... Jewelry?...hmm. OK, OK. So I walked in the store to get the 411. They are everything one expects; Jewelry, sculptures, fine art, and home decor!

Darcy Miro Metal Shop is home to amazing pieces of 18-karat gold and sterling silver rings, cuffs, bracelets, necklaces, and home decor such as mirrors, tiles, and wall paper (wall metal decor). Each hand made sculpture is the work of Darcy Miro. Her manipulation of molded metals is completely brilliant and meticulous. Each one of a kind creation embodies the perfect balance of texture and smoothness, allowing a sense of movement, creating a kind of living quality. Alright, I can write a book on this stuff, but I won't, so you just have to check out the website or visit her shop. Organic, fashionable, and contemporary, fused by miracle artistry. Darcy Miro is just that...A Miracle Worker!

Fashion, Vintage & Photography = Robert Christian Malmberg

Robert Christian Malmberg, a very talented photographer located in New York will sit you down in his studio with makeup artists and hairstylists to prep you for your shoot. Think of it as Glamour shots! Well, not quite. Robert shoots with an antique bellows camera and a vintage lens, and mixes up chemicals etc., to recreate a look as if you've been photographed during the civil war era. So, glamour shot not...but nostalgic vintage yes! I really appreciate his whole concept and approach. Malmberg can also be found shooting models backstage during fashion events etc. His amazing pieces can be purchased from his website... or better yet, just schedule your next portrait shot with Robert Malmberg.

The Art of Origami

When you see a commercial, or an ad in a magazine that contains little or large origami figures, more than likely it's the genius folding work of Sok Ho Song! Sok works for a New York based design group, Blasa Brjost. They serve the needs of retail and fashion industries, museums and special events. I love his little creased creations, and I especially love the idea of juxtoposing origami and fashion together.
